At the suggestion and encouragement of Laura Furtado and Carla Catherwood, Santa Baby was meant to be part of a show series under the branding of The Chic-a-Boom Room that also included a 100 minute performance by Army of Sass (then known as NuvoBurlesque) at the Mod Club later in the month. High Society Cabaret would be responsible for three smaller and more intimate performances at Nyood in the weeks leading up. Anna’s vision for these shows was mid-century kitsch inspired by performances by Eartha Kitt.
“From the beginning rehearsals were confusing, overcrowded and a logistical nightmare. Everything about this show was a challenge. The dancers were all over the map because they were also performing in Carla's show.” - Anna Jaeger Being required to pull dancers from the DivaGirl Roster also meant sometimes working with dancers who lacked the appropriate training and performance experience to execute the shows. There was regular difficulty with the girls juggling rehearsals, and learning the choreography, especially if those dancers were split between High Society Cabaret and Army of Sass.
Promotion also proved to be a massive hurdle in bringing in an audience and making ticket sales. All the shows in the series had the same name and branding, making it confusing for audiences and diluting their attendance. Inevitably audiences vied towards the Army of Sass’s larger show at the Mod Club. With the second High Society Cabaret Santa Baby show being so poorly attended, Anna opted to cancel the third show. The shows left Anna to pay the remaining expenses out of pocket, leaving her feeling disappointed, discouraged, and set up to inevitably fail by the Chic-A-Boom Room. |
